Yoga nidra, or the yoga of waking sleep, consists of a complex series of exercises designed to induce the sophronic state. Caycedo developed the technique while studying with some of the greatest yoga masters in India at the time. Which exercises are used depends on the subject. Some, like focussing your awareness on each body part, are extremely pleasurable. Yoga nidra helps people tune in to their own body. Here is an example of a yoga nidra exercise, based on an excerpt from Dennis Boyes' excellent work, 'The Yoga Of Waking Sleep '
This is the last in this series of 6 autogenic training exercises. Each of the exercises must be learned before proceeding to the next in sequence. Unlike yoga, autogenic training does not involve difficult postures or breath control exercises. There is no equipment and there is little time actually devoted to practice (5 to 10 minutes 3 times per day). Yet learning this ingenious combination of suggestion and conditioning will enable you to bring about deep therapeutic relaxation under stress automatically. With just a thought, you can relax any part of your body at any given moment during your day.
However, it is the alpha state, some 8 to 12 waves per second, that we are increasingly realizing is very important. It is when many people have their best ideas, when your imagination is really working. Some people manage to reach this state easily, for example, in a really good creative session such as the one described in the day in the life of Annie's brain. Others need consciously to seek to lower the speed of their busy daytime brain, through techniques such as brain gym, autogenic training, yoga, or other methods of relaxation. Or, it could be through really concentrated effort that you some
In addition to improving athletic performance, these same exercises, based on traditional yoga and other oriental methods, are highly conducive for the development of paranormal faculties. Orientals are familiar with the 'special powers' demonstrated by yogis at various stages in their training, regarding them as signs of progress.
A metronome or the steady beat of a drum are both excellent stimuli for inducing the alpha state. Yoga, Zen meditation and some occult techniques achieve the same effect concentrating on a point in the body or on a mandala, emptying the mind, adopting a certain breathing rhythm, concentrating on a Zen 'koan' (a kind of spiritual riddle), staring at a tarot card, etc., are all techniques you can use to enter the alpha state. them rediscover the benefits of spiritual practices like meditation or yoga, acting as a bridge between two worlds, that of our modern, technological society, and the world of the ancient sages, with their highly developed understanding of inner processes and the subconscious mind.

In order for sophrological therapy to be effective, subjects must first be completely relaxed. The same is true for autogenic training and yoga nidra. Caycedo had the idea of developing a series of what he called dynamic relaxation exercises. He collected techniques from various eastern sources (yoga, Zen Buddhism, etc.), evaluated their effectiveness by measuring results on an EEG (electroencephalogram) and then organized the best of them into a three-step method. Why did he turn to the east for inspiration Simply because eastern philosophies seem more oriented towards exploring the workings of the inner mind than those developed here in the west - the separation of mind and body is so deeply engraved in our culture that, despite an overwhelming amount of research showing the fundamental link between the two, many people still cannot understand how physical exercise, for example, can have an impact on the way they think or feel. Respecting the order in which human faculties evolved,...
Although these two individuals seemed to have had certain channels in their minds naturally open, others can nevertheless open up these same super memory channels through training. Both mental mathematics and mental chess require an inner visual acuity of extreme detail, but often in a moving or flexible fashion. A photographic memory is the observational recall often referred to as eidetic imagery in children (37 have the ability at an early age). The ability is rare in adults, and involves seeing an inner picture that lasts for varying intervals with each individual. Some yogis develop a 'super memory' after doing daily exercises in raja yoga (mental yoga) for about a year. Through exercises in visualization, concentration, breathing and altering your state of consciousness -- control of the memory triggering mechanism is achieved and a 'photographic' memory is developed.
Gradual exteriorization of the senses. Yoga provides an excellent method for doing this. You start by concentrating on your feet and calves, focussing on the sensations in these parts of your body. Then you direct your awareness upward, imagining that your energy body is able to separate itself from your physical body and float above it. As you do this you no longer feel any sensations in your feet or calves. Repeat the process, focussing on other parts of your body, until you reach your neck, at which point you will feel your energy body The yoga technique seems to be similar to the natural mechanism which triggers the phenomenon of astral travelling, since descriptions of spontaneous occurrences begin in more or less the same way.
There's no magical stress buster that works for everyone. You need to find activities and coping strategies that are effective for you. For some people, the answer is yoga or a nature walk for others, it might be listening to music or having a heart-to-heart conversation with a close friend. Exercise is a proven method of relieving stress. Aerobic exercise, such as running, brisk walking, bicycling, and swimming, is an excellent way of burning off stress and negative emotions. Resistance training (weight lifting) is an underappreciated form of exercise with excellent stress-relief effects. ,165
