Whole or fragmented dreams, disjointed images and thoughts, feelings and bits of memories fill our minds continually while we sleep, even between REM phases. Although REM phases are accompanied by intense physiological activity, which may be why it is easier to remember dreams that occur during those periods, they are by no means the only times we dream. The fact that we recall REM dreams is simply due to the fact that our conscious mind is more active than during other, deeper periods of sleep.
