Targets Of The Calcium Trigger

We discussed in the last chapter the elaborate mechanisms involved in generating a level of postsynaptic calcium sufficient to trigger LTP. What is it that this calcium signal does? The potential direct targets of the calcium signal are listed in Table 1. Obviously any direct target of the calcium signal has to be a calcium-binding protein. While there are a number of calcium-binding proteins in cells, based on the known functional categories of calcium-binding proteins and those that have been implicated in LTP, there are four proteins we need to pay particular attention to: calmodulin, PKC(s), calpain, and phospholipases.
