In 1999, Shenk et al. discovered that immunization with amyloid p peptide protects against amyloid p plaque deposition in a mutant mouse model for Alzheimer's disease (92). In these studies they used the "PDAPP" transgenic mouse expressing human APP mutated at amino acid 717. The approach was a fairly straightforward application of traditional immunization—they injected the Aß peptide into the animals, using an adjuvant carrier to boost the immune response.
