The second type of immunity, called humoral, is the immune system's antibody response to a foreign substance (antigen). The antibody is a protein that forms a perfect physical and chemical fit to the antigen molecule, and thus neutralizes it. This antibody response can go haywire and produce allergies, hay fever, and asthma. The body has the capacity to produce new antibodies, or antidotes, to thousands of different compounds or antigens, like a chemical factory that can change the substance it produces at will. Occasionally, a hyperactive immune system can mistakenly attack the body's own tissues, as happens in rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. On the flip side, a weak immune system that does not destroy wayward cancerous cells can lead to malignant tumor formation, as occurs in AIDS.

Steroids like hydrocortisone and prednisone are used to treat severe asthma and autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus). Many skin creams and ointments also contain steroids, but these are not absorbed in sufficient quantities to affect the brain. Steroids work by suppressing the body's natural immune response against bacteria, viruses, and toxins, and this helps in diseases where there is a wayward, self-destructive immune response. Lipoproteins are complexes of carrier proteins and lipids, including cholesterol, that in the cardiovascular and digestive systems are involved in the trafficking of dietary lipids. Apolipoprotein E is a component of lipoproteins and mediates the uptake of these lipoprotein particles into target tissues. In the liver, ApoE is incorporated into very low density lipopro-teins (VLDLs), which carry triglycerides and cholesterol to peripheral tissues, mainly muscle and adipose tissue. In the gut, ApoE becomes a component of chy-lomicrons and mediates the transport of dietary fat to the liver. In macrophages, the scavenger cells of the immune system, ApoE is involved in the resecretion of absorbed cholesterol. However, ApoE is also expressed in cells of the nervous system, predominantly in astrocytes. The role of ApoE secretion and its binding to the ApoE receptors (ApoERs) that are present on the surface of neurons is unclear at this point.

Vitamin E is known to boost T cell function, which is important for the proper functioning of the immune system, which defends the body against bacteria, viruses, and toxins. Vitamin E may also indirectly protect against heart disease and cancer. It is present in soy-bean oil, margarine, nuts, wheat germ, and seeds, but the amounts contained in these natural foods are insufficient to produce a strong antiaging or promemory effect.
