The Immune System

The second type of immunity, called humoral, is the immune system's antibody response to a foreign substance (antigen). The antibody is a protein that forms a perfect physical and chemical fit to the antigen molecule, and thus neutralizes it. This antibody response can go haywire and produce allergies, hay fever, and asthma. The body has the capacity to produce new antibodies, or antidotes, to thousands of different compounds or antigens, like a chemical factory that can change the substance it produces at will. Occasionally, a hyperactive immune system can mistakenly attack the body's own tissues, as happens in rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. On the flip side, a weak immune system that does not destroy wayward cancerous cells can lead to malignant tumor formation, as occurs in AIDS.

Exercise 7 Relaxation For Improved Awareness

Deep relaxation relieves tension & fear, and strengthens the immune response to disease. By relaxing your body, your mind becomes calm and clear while your brain wave activity is slowed to the alpha state (7 to 14 cycles per second). You can create your own relaxation cassette tape or have someone read the following relaxation dialogue to you or you can mentally and progressively repeat the following points to yourself.

Foods Rich in Antioxidants

Vitamin E is known to boost T cell function, which is important for the proper functioning of the immune system, which defends the body against bacteria, viruses, and toxins. Vitamin E may also indirectly protect against heart disease and cancer. It is present in soy-bean oil, margarine, nuts, wheat germ, and seeds, but the amounts contained in these natural foods are insufficient to produce a strong antiaging or promemory effect. You need to take vitamin E capsules to get this added kick. The Alzheimer's study utilized 2,000 units of vitamin E daily, but this is a high dose that may increase the risk of bleeding, because vitamin E is an anticoagulant. Until systematic studies are conducted to compare different vitamin E doses in the prevention and treatment of memory loss, I suggest that you stick to a daily capsule of 800 units (400 units if you want to be more conservative). I myself follow this strategy.

Laughter music and sleep

Laughter is important because when we laugh we reduce our stress levels. Laughter leads to a decrease in the amount of cortisol flowing through our system. That is why it is always helpful when someone diffuses a difficult situation by making us laugh. Research has shown that laughter also improves the immune system and leads to better problem solving.

Inflammation in the Alzheimers Brain

Within the brain, the immune system interacts closely with nerve cells in several regions and is triggered in a variety of ways. The complement pathway (a sequence of enzymes proteins) plays an important role in the immune response, and an overactive complement response can damage different areas of the brain. In patients with Alzheimer's disease, complement activation can trigger the formation of amyloid protein that collects in clumps to make up the pathologic amyloid plaques. Researchers are now studying anti-inflammatory agents that can block or inactivate complement in the treatment of not only Alzheimer's disease, but also mild to moderate memory loss during the aging process.

Apolipoprotein E In The Nervous System

Lipoproteins are complexes of carrier proteins and lipids, including cholesterol, that in the cardiovascular and digestive systems are involved in the trafficking of dietary lipids. Apolipoprotein E is a component of lipoproteins and mediates the uptake of these lipoprotein particles into target tissues. In the liver, ApoE is incorporated into very low density lipopro-teins (VLDLs), which carry triglycerides and cholesterol to peripheral tissues, mainly muscle and adipose tissue. In the gut, ApoE becomes a component of chy-lomicrons and mediates the transport of dietary fat to the liver. In macrophages, the scavenger cells of the immune system, ApoE is involved in the resecretion of absorbed cholesterol. However, ApoE is also expressed in cells of the nervous system, predominantly in astrocytes. The role of ApoE secretion and its binding to the ApoE receptors (ApoERs) that are present on the surface of neurons is unclear at this point.

Illumination Lighting

Light affects the level of alertness a person has by limiting the amount of melatonin produced by the body. This natural substance causes drowsiness. Researchers have found that sunlight, and to some extent certain forms of artificial light, also impact responsiveness and mood, help cure rickets, reduce infections and colds, and can generally lead to better health. Studies on the impact of light in a variety of settings have resulted in some important discoveries related to human performance and physical and mental conditions in humans. Such research has also caused many school systems and organizations to rethink and retool the lighting in classrooms and work areas. For example, one study by a Vermont psychiatrist15 on the impact of lighting in three elementary schools found that lighting impacted absenteeism. In the experiment, London changed the light bulbs in a number of classrooms from standard to full-spectrum (Vitalite) to better simulate sunlight. According to London, when...

Exercise 150 Using Self Healing Thoughts

All doctors acknowledge the power of your mind to heal your body. They use terms to explain away such healings like the placebo effect or a state of remission, but they know it's your mind that is creating such an effect on your body. Your body has a natural ability to protect and heal itself on a day to day basis. All so-called cures that take place in the world are simply stimulations of your own immune system. When your energy is high, so is your health. When your energy is low, so is your ability to heal itself, and it's at this time that you're most susceptible to ill health. Most people have heard of Christian Science practitioners refusing surgical operations on serious ailments -- even cancer -- because of their belief structure of mind over matter. How is the process of self-healing done How can you reduce or eliminate your susceptibility to ailments with the power of your mind

Types of Antiinflammatory Agents

In rheumatoid arthritis, the kind that causes swelling and deformity of the fingers and toes, as well as the hands and feet, the body's immune system mistakenly identifies joint tissue parts as alien and attacks them with a vengeance. Since many people who suffer from this disease regularly have to take high doses of anti-inflammatory medications, the question arises do these people have a lower prevalence of dementia, especially Alzheimer's disease, compared to the rest of the population

Common Medication Culprits

Steroids like hydrocortisone and prednisone are used to treat severe asthma and autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus). Many skin creams and ointments also contain steroids, but these are not absorbed in sufficient quantities to affect the brain. Steroids work by suppressing the body's natural immune response against bacteria, viruses, and toxins, and this helps in diseases where there is a wayward, self-destructive immune response. Steroids have a number of side effects, including stomach ulceration and weakening of bone structure (osteoporosis). In high doses, steroids can affect the brain, causing memory loss, confusion, and even psychosis. But subtle effects particularly low-grade depression, anxiety, and memory loss are far more common.

Exercise 142 Improve Your Physical Strength In 7 Days

George Goodheart (a Detroit chiropractor responsible for the current development of applied kinesiology) discovered that various points on the body are receptors and stimulators of the lymphatic system, and that these receptors are connected to different organs and muscles of the body. It was also found that your thymus gland is linked to your immune system and your ability to resist disease and infection. Since your thymus gland is directly tied into your body's strength and energy flow, chewing a thymus extract can temporarily strengthen you.

Exercise 6 Positive Affirming Positive Living

Research has shown that there is a rapid multiplication of streptococcus bacteria in the throat during emotional stress. Fear, worry and internal stress restrict the flow of saliva, and you need saliva to neutralize mouth acids and prevent tooth decay. Dental plaque is caused by the bacterium, Streptococcus mutans, which is counteracted to a large extent by the antibodies in your system. Your antibody level is increased with an improved immune system. Your immune system tends to lower its resistance level in the presence of repressed negativity, and there is a draining of your bodily energy needed to protect you against disorders. Many diseases occur when a lowered immune system allows microbes to develop and proliferate.

Exercise 52 Improving Your Visualization Skills

There is a life energy flowing and ebbing in each one of us, and our immune system is directly linked to this life energy stream. Your strength does not solely rely on the size of your muscles. There are many environmental factors that can vitalize or devitalize your body on subtle levels. With certain people, some factors carry more weight than others in their effect, hence the variability from individual to individual. An accumulation of negative influences weakens your immune system, leaving you more susceptible to disease and overall emotional upset. But there is no need for you to go through life lacking energy and in a negative, mental slump. By being cognizant of what environmental factors de-energize you, you can avoid or at least mentally override such factors when they're recognized.

Selenium

Both magnesium and selenium increase the production of antibodies and enhance immune system function. Magnesium is also a catalyst for enzymes involved in energy production, and helps to regulate cell membrane stability. This range of actions has lent it some standing as an antiaging and antimemory-loss therapy, but systematic clinical studies have not yet been conducted.

Controlling stress

When we are under great stress, we want to fight or run away. Stress is at the heart of ensuring our successful survival as a species. We have to decide whether to stay or go off to pastures new. Biologically, our heart starts beating up to five times faster and our adrenal gland produces cortisol. Our blood vessels expand to ensure better blood circulation, our pupils dilate for better sight, and our digestive system is shut down through the narrowing of the blood vessels that feed the organs involved in digestion. All of this is controlled by the hypothalamus in our brain. If the incident of stress is short lived, our biological systems return to normal and no harm is done. If it is prolonged, we suffer from all the well-known stress-related illnesses ulcers, bowel diseases, depression, loss of memory, and a reduced immune system.

How Vitamin E Works

In laboratory experiments, exposing brain cells to vitamin E limits the number of cells damaged by glutamate, a naturally occurring substance that can act as a destructive neurotransmitter in many brain regions. This may be another method by which vitamin E protects against stroke. A Tufts University investigation found that a single 200 mg capsule of vitamin E daily significantly improved immune system response.
