Selecting Small Group Leaders And Volunteers

By randomly selecting people to take on various roles throughout your session, you reduce the likelihood that one or two individuals will dominate or control the session, discussions, and activities. You also encourage interaction and input by all participants.

To set the stage for participants playing an active role in the program, discuss the leader/scribe process at the beginning of your programs. It also helps when you plan to give small incentives (e.g.. buttons, toys, candy, or other fun items) to your "volunteers" and let them know this at the beginning. Doing so can actually generate some friendly competition as people rush to volunteer throughout the day.
