Ayurveda the Science of Life
Chittaranjan Andrade, has studied an Ayurvedic preparation that now goes by its modern name, BR-16A. In controlled animal experiments, he showed that BR-16A improved learning and reversed short-term memory deficits in mice. But when he approached the four manufacturers of BR-16A in India, none of them were willing to fund further basic research to find out which of the twenty or more ingredients in the substance was responsible for improving memory. They also refused to fund controlled clinical studies in patients, because if one of the companies invested a large amount of money in research on BR-16A, any positive results obtained would translate into free profits for the other three manufacturers that had not invested in the research effort. As Chittaranjan discovered to his chagrin, it is virtually impossible to get financial support to conduct large-scale, systematic studies of Ayurvedic and other traditional medications. During my medical school years, I read some of the Ayurvedic texts, translated from Sanskrit into English, that described a wide range of therapies herbs and plant extracts, metals, and bloodletting for various maladies. The vedas, among which Ayurveda is only a small component, were both the Encyclopaedia Britannica and the Bible of ancient Indian civilization. They were rooted in religion but con tained a great deal of practical information and advice for everyday living. A number of Ayurvedic and related remedies have been discovered and subsequently used in Western medicine, including digitalis (digoxin) for congestive heart failure, rauwolfia alkaloids to extract reserpine (used to treat hypertension in the 1950s and 1960s), and several plant extracts with anticholinergic properties (to treat diarrhea, for example).
Although the initial effects are mostly temporary, continual exposure to weakening factors can eventually lead to a more lasting condition of ill health. Elimination of debilitating factors in your life allows your body to build up its energy reserves again, just like during the process of sleep and relaxation. By increasing your energy, your health correspondingly improves.
An aura is a vibrational energy surrounding every material object. Your health, personality, spirituality and past lives are reflected in your aura. Just as some people can hear sounds beyond the normal range of hearing and into the infrasonic and ultrasonic levels, other people can see a wider range of the electromagnetic spectrum. The aura is made up of several layers of varying density, and is the reflector of the soul. Your aura swirls as a colorful vibrational encasement around you several feet thick, and it is a finer representation of your electromagnetic field than your etheric body. The higher your spiritual development and the better your health, the purer and more vibrantly brilliant your aura is. The darker or duller the aura, the more spiritually, mentally and physically imbalanced or unhealthy you are. When you are desperately ill, your aura begins to fade -- and in most cases, fades out completely before you die.
The next time a negative surge is upon you, assume it is directed at you for a purpose, and refuse to countenance it. Use your conscious will power to reject the impression. Just as sound can cancel out sound, your natural electromagnetic energy field can do the same as long as you consciously direct it to do so. The more you personally increase your energy amplitude, the easier it will be to turn away an external focus of negativity (review Exercise -- Increase Your Energy, Increase Your Health ).

Ayurveda is a complex system described in ancient Hindu religious and medical texts, detailing the use of literally hundreds of natural substances as medicines. Unani is a system of medicine developed centuries ago in Arabia and Persia, which later mingled with local influences in the Indian subcontinent. Its popularity has dwindled over time. Chinese medicines include a variety of plants and their extracts to treat both symptoms and diseases. Many of them are meant to promote health and block some of the effects of aging even in the absence of disease, and some of them have recently risen to prominence in the fight against age-related memory loss. controlled study. The main advantage of homeopathy, of course, is that because the tablets contain so little active ingredient it is usually harmless, which cannot always be said for the medicines from some of the older disciplines like Ayurveda and Unani. To my knowledge, there are no worthwhile promemory homeopathic medications.
Everything in the universe is interconnected in some way. Each one of your thoughts has some kind of an effect on the things in your environment -- from the animate to the inanimate. Thoughts involving emotions are especially effective in this capacity on both yourself as well as on others. Many of these effects are discussed in other exercises in this manual. Since your adverse thoughts have adverse effects on your health and well being, beneficial thoughts have a positive influence on your overall welfare.
Schools the world over have long sought to develop both mental and physical wellbeing, many of them even using the above quotation from Latin poet Juvenal as their school motto a healthy mind in a healthy body. In the high street, gyms and fitness centers are now widespread, but much of the business world has been slower to catch on.
To proceed with this exercise, assume a comfortable position and get into a self-induced hypnotic state. While experiencing this relaxed state, repeat the following set of affirmations 3 times. My body and mind are filling with renewed energy. I am feeling rested and refreshed. The deeper I relax, the less sleep I need. Practice this exercise for 15 minutes 3 times a day. Within days, you will notice that you no longer desire as much sleep as you used to require. To rouse yourself back to a waking state, simply count slowly from 10 to 1 and progressively awaken yourself. At the count of one, open your eyes and say, I am wide awake, feeling fine and in perfect health. This exercise is especially useful when you drive long distances and start to feel drowsy.
Another way of eliminating negative feelings is by increasing your energy level. The higher your energy, the more difficult it becomes to experience lower, negative emotions. Love, compassion, courage and happiness resonate with high energy, and are stimulated by wide areas of brain cells in the cerebral cortex. Lust, anger, fear and pleasure are simple, low energy emotions prompted from specific spots in the limbic system of the brain, which is brain tissue about the size of a small fist lying underneath the 2 large cerebral halves of the brain. You can increase your energy by good exercise, better nutrition, better associations, better breathing habits, better music, better drinking water, better posture and better sleep (review Exercise -Increase Your Energy, Increase Your Health ).
The most harmful beliefs you can have are your self-limiting beliefs. These are beliefs about yourself and your potential that hold you back. Most of them are not true. Most of them are the result of information you have accepted without question, often from early childhood. Even if it is completely untrue, if you believe yourself to be limited in areas such as achieving wonderful health and happiness and earning a lot of money, that will become your truth. As the author Richard Bach in his book Illusions wrote, Argue for your limitations and sure enough, they're yours.
Became the emblem for Hitler's Nazi party. Even Jewish concentration camp survivors test strong in its presence, displaying a level of symbol response that goes much deeper than individual feelings. If you test for the counterclockwise swastika, you might be weak or strong depending on which cerebral hemisphere is dominant. If you are cerebrally balanced, neither one will weaken you. Also, the more life energy you generate (see Exercise -- Increase Your Energy, Increase Your Health ), the less affected you will be by symbols or any other environmental factors.
Since I want yon all to stay healthy, the memory feats in this lesson utilize a regular deck of cards not with five, but with the usual four Aces. Truthfully, although this chapter is devoted entirely to remembering playing cards, I am stressing the demonstrations you can do with a deck of cards and your trained memory. The systems, however, can be applied to many card games. Please don't think that after you've mastered these you can always win at cards. Keep in mind that you can't beat a man at his own game. I will leave the applications of the systems up to you I use them for demonstration purposes only.
However, what may be true for a balanced mind is not necessarily true for a non-controlled mind. Psychasthenic patients, therefore, can develop very useful habits through voluntary action. If their actions are carried out properly, they feel more in control, become calmer and weigh their actions more carefully. With their brain constantly occupied with something concrete, they experience less and less anxiety. Their self confidence is given a boost, and they get into the habit of controlling what they think and do.
Normal persons can easily follow the progression of their thoughts. In the non-controlled state, a part of the mind is usually unconscious, and patients draw conclusions which are opposite to what they intended. I am not exaggerating when I say that a neurasthenic patient can come up with a statement like, I am in perfect health, therefore I'm sick and this with the total assurance of being logical and correct. All we have to do to understand what they mean is to add the patient's unconscious deductions. I am in perfect health, but I may get sick may be what they mean. Or What if I get sick or I'm afraid of getting sick or simply I am sick
No matter how old you are, it's not too late to take steps to prevent memory loss. In this chapter, I review thirteen strategies for achieving and maintaining optimal memory. Some are good health habits that can reduce the risk of illnesses that might impair your memory as well as the likelihood that you'll need medications with memory-related side effects. Others are strategies that appear to strengthen the brain and enhance cognitive function. Best of all, they're neither expensive nor difficult to carry out. If you're concerned enough about your memory to wonder if something's wrong, you should see your doctor. Begin with a consultation with your primary care physician. Because this doctor knows you and your medical history, he or she is in an advantageous position to assess the big picture of your health and consider the more common medical and psychological conditions that can cause memory loss.
After mastering Exercise -- Audio Telepathy and Exercise -- Visual Telepathy, you are ready to combine those techniques with those learned in Exercise -- Learn Through Time Distortion. Assume a comfortable position and face your partner (who has also mastered the aforementioned exercises). Both of you should now get into a self-hypnotic state (review Exercise -- Learning Self-Hypnosis ) and clear your minds. Have someone start a metronome at 60 beats per minute. The sender now uses the time distortion technique, and experiences each beat interval as 4 minutes apart. The sender acknowledges that this is so by saying, I'm ready. The sender reviews the material mentally in a time distorted fashion as he reaches out with his mind and transmits it to the receiver. The receiver now mentally pulses his body towards the sender as in Exercise -- Audio Telepathy. There are critical success factors in almost every area of life. For example, there are four critical success factors that determine your physical health. They are (1) proper diet (2) proper weight (3) proper exercise and (4) proper rest. Almost all of your health problems can be traced back to a problem or deficiency in one of these four areas.
Delores Krieger, a professor of nursing at New York University made some breakthroughs with the technique of laying-on-of-hands, later known as therapeutic touch. Because there is an exchange of energy through the power of touch, her research showed that patients in hospitals recovered faster when they were touched in a caring way by friends, relatives or nurse attendants. The healing energy exchanged was improved by a more positive attitude of the givers (see Exercise -Increase Your Energy, Increase Your Health ). Patients were also healed faster when they expressed an abundance of self-love and self-appreciation.
Here are some other factors to keep yourself motivated. When you do something successfully, celebrate or compliment yourself. Reiterate positive affirmations to make yourself feel better. Read and listen to positive motivational books and tapes. You'll find it easier to motivate yourself when you have higher energy, so review Exercise -- Increase Your Energy, Increase Your Health for ways to increase your energy. Diversify your day and be grateful for your blessings, even the smaller ones. Excite yourself over your day and be as happy as possible. Describe to yourself the benefits about what you are about to achieve. Write it down for better clarity. Do some form of daily, physical exercise to keep yourself motivated. Always see that your personal needs are met throughout the self-motivating process. When you don't sacrifice your personal needs, you are not working against yourself. Unfulfilled needs create chaos and imbalance.

Except for iron, all the heavy metals described in this section come under the category of trace elements because they are needed in microscopic quantities for normal bodily function. These metals can become toxic if taken in high doses. You may recall my earlier story about how my father's Parkinson's disease was going to be treated with an Ayurvedic heavy metal concoction, and I put a stop to it because of the potential for toxicity. Traces of lead, mercury, or arsenic, which are indistinguishable to the naked eye when mixed with other metals, can be extremely dangerous and even fatal. Therefore, if you plan to take a metallic supplement of any type, you must buy it from a reputed manufacturing source, preferably one with a national or international reputation.
The results of this study were striking, and the advantages of regular exercise are now universally accepted as part of any good health program, regardless of age. A recent study by Kramer and colleagues (1999) also produced impressive results in 174 previously sedentary people sixty to seventy-five years old, regular walking led to improved performance on cognitive tests of executive function (memory was not systematically assessed in that study). As with diet, exercise should be a lifelong effort and not cease abruptly when you reach fifty or sixty or seventy. The body is a dynamic system and needs constant physical pruning and reshaping to perform optimally.
Surprising to Westerners is the fact that good controlled breathing has a great deal to do with all the extranormal powers exhibited by yogis and lamas of the East. How could such a simple thing like breathing be connected to better mental powers The Hindus call breathing exercises pranayama, which is the control of the prana or subtle life energy of your breath. Food and drink are important, but if your breath ceases, all other manifestations of energy and movement of your body stop automatically. When you control the motion of your lungs, you control the subtle prana. When your life energy is controlled, every part of your body can be filled with it and bodily control is much easier. All diseases of your body can be eliminated by controlling and regulating your life energy, and it brings about the power of healing. All doctors acknowledge the power of your mind to heal your body. They use terms to explain away such healings like the placebo effect or a state of remission, but they know it's your mind that is creating such an effect on your body. Your body has a natural ability to protect and heal itself on a day to day basis. All so-called cures that take place in the world are simply stimulations of your own immune system. When your energy is high, so is your health. When your energy is low, so is your ability to heal itself, and it's at this time that you're most susceptible to ill health. Most people have heard of Christian Science practitioners refusing surgical operations on serious ailments -- even cancer -- because of their belief structure of mind over matter. How is the process of self-healing done How can you reduce or eliminate your susceptibility to ailments with the power of your mind
When you pray or think strongly for someone to receive good health, you are sending energy to that person. Now there are many variables as to how a person processes available energy, but however the person is processing his available energy, you have increased the available energy to him or her with your kindly prayers. The longer and clearer your prayer for that person, the more energy is provided. Good health and high energy go hand in hand. People with high energy are healthier than people with low energy, so increasing one's energy level increases one's health (see Exercise -- Increase Your Energy, Increase Your Health ).
Prevention is the best strategy against the aging process, but our society often prefers to ignore problems until they strike us in the face. In some cases, we can get away with it, as the United States government managed to do with the federal budget deficit in the 1990s, waiting for the other shoe to drop before swinging into a corrective action mode. But maintaining good health is a different matter altogether.
Born in 1734 in Weiler Germany, Mesmer wrote a doctoral thesis on the 'influence of the planets on the human body.' He tried to demonstrate that a kind of energy, which he called animal magnetism, originating in space, penetrates the body and has an impact on our health. The theory resembles that of the oriental concept of vital energy, called Qi by the Chinese and prana by the Hindus. Soviet and Czech researchers studying the phenomenon use the terms bioplasmic and psychotonic energy respectively.
A few years after my father developed Parkinson's disease, during one of my annual visits to my parents' house, I strolled in to see my mother in her bedroom. She was clad in a faded off-white sari, her domestic dress as per traditional custom. On neuropsychological testing, she performed within the expected range for her age on most tests, except that her delayed recall score on the Selective Reminding Test, which evaluates the ability to learn lists of words and keep them in memory (a test described in chapter 1), was slightly below par. Her blood tests showed no metabolic, thyroid, or nutritional deficiencies, and her MRI scan was normal. Physically, she was in good health with nothing abnormal on her medical or neurologic examination. She seemed somewhat anxious and was clearly under stress, but I did not think she had an anxiety disorder or depressive illness.
It is very easy to get out of shape playing quiz machines. The smoky atmosphere of a pub and the constant temptation to drink are not conducive to a healthy lifestyle. Some people play better after one pint of beer. My own experience suggests that the brain performs best without any alcohol. The one thing you must watch out for, however, is the sort of landlord who might get difficult if you order tomato juices all night.
The man walked in, greeted Major Pole in a friendly manner and sat down on the edge of his bed. The Major thought the man had been sent by colleagues in the underground resistance movement to help him. The doctor said he didn't have the necessary medication with him, and told Major Pole to send one of his servants to a pharmacy in the next town to get a special herbal remedy. He wrote out a prescription and handed it over.
Positive thoughts are life enhancing. They empower you and make you feel stronger and more confident. Positive thinking is not just a motivational idea. It has measurable, constructive effects on your personality, your health, your levels of energy, and your creativity. The more positive and optimistic you are, the happier you will be in every area of your life.
You should idealize about your health, as well. Imagine your health was perfect in every way. How would you be different from today Exactly how much do you want to weigh, and what level of fitness do you want to enjoy How does that compare with where you are today What steps will you have to take, and what changes will you have to make in your health habits in order to become the ideal person that you desire to be personally This description then becomes your ideal future vision for yourself.
Each time you think of the fearful situation or person, your heart will beat faster and your stomach will churn. You will be unable to sleep well at night. The fear will affect your health, your happiness, your relationships, and your interactions with your customers and co-workers. Over time, you will become so preoccupied with the fear-inducing situation that you will not be able to think of anything else. This is no way to live.

Self-improvement is a thing which you must practice throughout your life because once you started to believe that you are perfect then, things will start to become complex. You need to know that no one is perfect and no one can be perfect.
